A Victorian era piece with elements of both Egyptian and Etruscan revival. A fat, dimensional scarab is carved from a single piece of garnet, appearing very dark until it gets some good lighting - then it glows red. Wrapped with double gold wires along the wing lines, it has tiny seed pear eyes and highly detailed legs. It sits on a diamond-shaped platform bordered with twisted wire and accented with hand granulation, all at the bottom of a pillar-like bar, and all with a rich satin finish. This was likely just one element of a larger piece of jewelry originally, but is a fairly substantial pendant on its own.
Some dark patina on the scarab's legs and where the bail loop is attached. The seed pearl eyes and the bail are newly added replacements. Lovely condition.
43mm total hanging length, 21mm wide. Scarab is 15.5mm long, 11.75mm wide, and 7mm deep. Seed pearls are 1.5mm, and bail opening is 5.25mm.
