Anubis is the Egyptian god of death and the afterlife, protector of graves, and guide to souls in the afterlife. Many depictions show him as a man with a jackal's head, but he is also frequently depicted in full jackal form, as he is here. He's lying alert, tail hanging low, with a bit of dimension and even the faint outline of ribs. The reverse and the bail are hallmarked for Egypt.
